Dr Adriana Marais is a theoretical physicist, with a research background in fields from information security to quantum effects in biology. She is currently Head of Innovation at SAP Africa, driving digitisation and innovation on the continent. She believes we are living in an unprecedented era in terms of technological development and data acquisition and analytics, and more than ever collaboration between science and business are required to solve and to anticipate the challenges ahead. She has a personal interest in space exploration as one of 100 finalist astronaut candidates with the Mars One Project.
The Allure of the Unknown
We are living at a unique point in the history of life on Earth. Developments in science and technology are taking place at an unprecedented rate, and the expansion of our society beyond this planet is within reach. The technological capability of sustaining terrestrial life on Mars is within reach, and the various projects aim to send crewed missions there in the upcoming decades. As a researcher in quantum biology and the origins of life, I believe that the establishment, and potential discovery of evidence of, life on Mars, would be one of the most profound possible contributions of science to humanity.
