The SA Innovation Summit is in its 10th year and at this year’s monumental event, inventors, innovators and established companies have the opportunity to enter their product into the Inventors Garage and/or Pitching Den competitions on a grander scale than ever before.
Summit Director, Dr Audrey Verhaeghe, says “We are looking forward to seeing global and local founder driven talent displayed at the Summit,” adding “The competitions are an important part of the Summit, with finalists and winners exposed to a large number of investors and standing a chance to win incredible prizes, funding opportunities, and a move into international markets.”
The Pitching Den Competition
This competition is open to high-growth start-ups, established companies and large corporates who are driving innovation on the African continent. “The Pitching Den was designed to recognise companies whose innovative tech-enabled solutions have the potential to make a significant impact on the growth of the continent,” says Dr Verhaeghe.
The overall winners will be announced at an Award Ceremony and will be entered into the Start-up World Cup in Silicon Valley where they will compete with the best start ups from all over the world, for the Grand Prize of US$ 1 Million. Winners will also receive PR exposure worth R500 000, business matching-making, acceleration, and much more.
Entries to the Pitching Den are made online. Finalists will be invited to pitch their business to a well-rounded panel of judges at the main conference.

The Inventor’s Garage Competition
The Summit is proud to announce that it has partnered with Popular Mechanics this year to run the Inventor’s Garage. This competition is open to anyone with a working prototype or product. The Inventor’s Garage accepts anything from a proven concept to products that are in early commercialisation – whether a kitchen or garage inventor, a business or a seasoned innovator.
The Inventions will be judged on the second day of the summit, on which the winners will be announced during the Award Ceremony as well as be awarded cash prizes. This will guarantee massive exposure, advice, mentorship, and possible deal-making.
Both Competitions close on the 9th of July 2017.

The Match & Invest Lounge
“The theme of the Innovation Summit this year is Innovation Revolution – rethinking the space for founders, investors, and innovative businesses,” says Dr Verhaeghe. “The competitions are one way we are making this happen. We are also connecting the Summit much more intensely with the continent of Africa as well as Europe through our video stream and global tech entrepreneurs at the Innovation Summit. We’re committed to supporting business deal-making through networking and match-making on business needs.
The SA Innovation Summit conference takes place this year from 6 – 7 September at the Cape Town Stadium. On 8 September, delegates also have the opportunity to take a Startup Ecosystem Tour that explores the ins-and-outs of the startup scene in Cape Town and surrounds. Six tours aligned to the key tracks of the Summit (FinTech, BioTech, AgriTech, EduTech, Cities of the Future, Space / Big Data / Artificial Intelligence / Robotics) will depart from Cape Town stadium to attend workshops at various startup, tech, funding and accelerator institutions in and around Cape Town.
With little more than two months to go, preparations are underway for what promises to be a stimulating, informative and game-changing event.
