GENEDiagnostics (Pty) Ltd is a genetic testing, research and training business, dedicated to providing a comprehensive, cost-effective service throughout South Africa and the rest of Africa via a network of private and public healthcare practitioners. We provide a full range of tests at a competitive price, but also provide valuable feedback and advice to healthcare professionals, which in turn empowers them to better advise their patients. GENEDiagnostics also provides training and research services in this field. Worldwide, genetic testing is gaining popularity as a tool for identifying a person’s vulnerability to inherited health disorders. It is also used to identify an individual (in much the same way as a fingerprint), or to determine a person’s ancestry.
GENEDiagnostics is 100% Black owned and the only Black owned genetics service provider. The company is managed by women with extensive experience in the genetics arena and management field. Prof Monique Zaahl, who brings over 15 years experience in the human genetic diagnostics and research field, founded the company. Having previously worked as a laboratory manager, registered multiple patents and managed an advanced testing laboratory at Stellenbosch University, Prof Zaahl is uniquely placed to establish and manage GENEDiagnostics’ testing, training and research services.
Furthermore, 60% of the rest of the staff at GENEdiagonstics are females. Our company has a good relationship with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and we take in interns from their programme annually. Based on our funding available, some of these interns are retained in the company. Youth development is of critical importance for our country and the African continent and especially in the biotechnology field. These interns usually join us very young and inexperienced but they leave confident and with various experiences.
OUR SERVICES: GENEDiagnostics’ service offering consists of 6 primary areas, specifically (i) Human Molecular Genetic Analysis (DNA Techniques) Testing, (ii) Forensic and Paternity Testing, (iii) Research, (iv) Training, (v) Medical devices (Rapid diagnostic kits), and (vi) Animal Genetic Analysis (DNA Techniques) Testing.
(i) Molecular Genetic Analysis (DNA Techniques) Testing forms the core of GENEDiagnostics’ service offering. This is a significant and growing market, both locally and internationally. See Addendum A for a detailed list of tests offered by GENEdiagnostics. The genetic tests offered were selected on the basis of analytical validity, clinical validity and clinical utility.
(ii) Forensic and Paternity Testing represents a small but growing private domestic market opportunity. The DNA of any person can be examined to identify genetic material from his/her biological parents. Except for identical twins, the DNA profile of every person is unique, which establishes DNA paternity testing as a highly reliable tool. Paternity testing is performed for various reasons including, but not limited to, health insurance, in the case of a divorce (child custody, child support and/or visitation) or in the case of adoption (child custody and/or inheritance). This testing also includes kinship (relatedness testing) and twin testing.
(iii) The Research performed at GENEdiagnostics leads to the development of more diagnostic tests, which GENEDiagnostics will have priority access to. The results obtained will be published in journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings, which GENEDiagnostics will leverage to maximise exposure.
(iv) The Training at GENEdiagnostics includes various courses and programs which includes advanced molecular techniques training, statistical analyses and bioinformatics workshops. As a company and in collaboration with the MediClinic group we also offer CPD sessions for medical practitioners on a regular basis.
(v) The medical devices (Rapid diagnostic kits) are high quality lateral flow rapid diagnostic test kits. These kits use unique technologies which gives the product superiority in terms of sensitivity, specificity and stability. Our offering includes tests kits for HIV/AIDS, malaria and a urine 5-panel multi-drug test (panel includes testing for amphetamine (speed), cocaine, heroin / morphine, methamphetamine (tik), methaqualone (mandrax) and THC (marijuana). This testing is done in collaboration with MD Diagnostech.
(vi) Animal Genetic Analysis (DNA Techniques) Testing has more recently become part of GENEdiagnostics offering. Our Animal Genetics service includes a wide variety of genetics tests mainly for canine, feline, cattle and wildlife species. Tests offered include parentage verification, genetic disease screening and sub-species verification. This testing is done in collaboration with Inqaba Biotech.
